EUROSTARS | TopsilGlobal: optical silicones

Eurostars

In 2018-2020, TopsilGlobal participated in an ambitious project of construction of an innovative photovoltaic panel with significantly improved performance. The solution was created by a group of engineers from the Polytechnic University of Lausanne, who founded Insolight SA, a company recognized in 2020 as one of the 10 best startups -ups in Switzerland.

Optical layers were manufactured by TopsilGlobal from Dow SILASTIC™ MS-4002 Moldable Optical Silicone, which combines high light transmittance with durability when exposed to various weather conditions, typical of photovoltaic panels. These features proved to be key to achieving the two most important goals of the project: record efficiency of 29%, according to measurements made at the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 2018 and validation of the technology in a pilot plant Insolight. We are proud of the fact that we have contributed to Insolight's readiness to move to the phase of mass production of highly efficient modules that enable dynamic control of the conversion of sunlight into the production of electricity, which will make the use of renewable sources in energy production even more attractive. The technology has also been validated for use in agrovoltaics.

“The results of Insolight's collaboration with Topsil are perfectly in line with Dow's sustainability goals and have opened up new perspectives for further improvement of optical layer design and mass production , which Dow intends to continue to support beyond the original scope of the Eurostars project”highlighted by François de Buyl, TS&D Scientist in the Dow Advanced Silicone Elastomers team.
